Description:

Located in Tagmanocan, near the heritage town of Lazi, Sambulawan Cave & Underground River is one of Siquijor’s most thrilling recent additions. Discovered and explored extensively by locals, this natural labyrinth officially opened to visitors in 2018. With three branching chambers, one of which houses a hidden freshwater river of approximately 200 meters long, the cave offers a captivating blend of geology and adventure. Wearing a life jacket and helmet-mounted light, visitors descend through limestone passages carved over millennia. Inside, narrow squeezes, wooden ladder climbs, and subterranean swimming evoke the spirit of classic cave explorations. You’ll navigate pools of chilled water, dodge harmless bats, weave past stalactites and stalagmites, and get intimate with the cave’s dark, echoing chambers. Local guides, often the very spelunkers who mapped the cave, lead visitors safely, sharing stories of discovery and the cave’s wild, untouched interior.

Activities & Visitor Experience

Guided Spelunking Adventure

The central highlight is a guided underground river tour that mixes light wading with walking, ladder climbs, and short swims in waist- to chest-deep water. Expect an immersive journey lasting around 1–2 hours through three cave arms

Natural Feature Exploration

As you explore, your guide will illuminate unique limestone formations, echo chambers, and pockets where bats, spiders, and tropical cockroaches reside, completely harmless but wildly fascinating.

Photo Opportunities & Surprise Discoveries

Though it's dim, the flicker of torchlight reveals beautiful grottoes, shimmering mineral walls, and reflective pools. Bring a waterproof camera or dry bag because you never know what hidden corner might steal your breath (and your photo).

Tips to Visitors

  • Book a local guide at entry: they’re required, knowledgeable, and often the very people who mapped the cave.
  • Wear trusty water shoes and bring a flashlight: though gear is provided, brighter lights are recommended.
  • Don’t worry if you’re not a strong swimmer: the river can be navigated with a life jacket, and heavy-duty swimming skills aren’t needed.
  • Avoid taking very young children: crowded, dark, and narrow passages can cause distress.
  • Be prepared for confined spaces and low ceilings: those with claustrophobia or fear of darkness may find parts challenging.
  • Bring a waterproof camera or use a dry bag: you’ll want to capture the gleaming caverns (bring extra batteries).
  • Stay comfortable in quick-dry clothing: wet, humid conditions inside the cave make light, moisture-wicking gear ideal.

Fee Rate

  • Entry to Sambulawan Cave is ₱250 per person, which includes a life jacket, headlamp, and an experienced local guide.

  • Visiting hours typically run from 8 AM to 4 PM, though seasonal variations may occur.
